PHOTOS: THE BOUNCING SOULS | HFTH6 12/26/13 | THE STONE PONY

The Bouncing Souls held their sixth annual Home For The Holidays concerts at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park and there was no shortage of holiday fun. What started as simple holiday shows six years ago has evolved into an all out multi-day festival with events throughout Asbury. This year Hurricane Sandy was on everyone's minds and a portion of all proceeds went towards relief for those effected.

For some reason my DSLR has bad luck at Bouncing Soul shows. Last show, it got kicked to pieces in the pit and this show decided to do some weird freeze up business so I had to fall back on my Leica D'Lux 6 point & shoot for most of these shots. That little camera is a wonder.

HFTH is pretty much the only Xmas tradition I keep, it's always good times with good people!

Check out a few more photos here...

NEWS: ALL PRINT SALE PROFITS BENEFIT HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF

I am a product of the Jersey Shore. When she was a teenager, my mom packed 15 highschool girlfriends in a rented little one bedroom cottage every summer. As kids my sister and I would swim in the waves of Island Beach State Park until you get that sore feeling in your chest after being in the water too long, and in my twenties an hour and a half drive south for a Midway Cheesesteak seemed like a perfectly reasonable endeavor. Asbury Park formed the person I would come to be.

In effort to help in a small way, I'm donating all profits from any print purchase to Hurrican Sandy Relief. Let's help restore the shore. Rise up friends.

SHOP HERE: 8x12 prints are now $20 will ALL PROFITS going to Hurricane Sandy Relief. Thru 12/7/12.

PHOTOS: TIM BARRY | ASBURY LANES 4/13/12

Last week, Asbury Lanes played host to Tim Barry's record release show for his fantastic new album "40 Miler." Infused with a relaxed confidence both in delivery and composition, "40 Miler" is forty minutes of lean, plainspoken storytelling and a definitive milestone in Barry's solo career . With "Driver Pull," Barry may have written his most beautiful song yet. If ever there was a "train" song to make Johnny Cash proud, this is it.

New songs fell easily into the evening's set of selections from Barry's earlier solo work. The ranting "Fine Foods Market" provided a hilarious moment when almost on queue a "a hipster with ironic mustache" joined in onstage to play some tambourine. Barry took it in stride and helped the kid find his rhythm throughout the song.

Barry's side man/resident picker Josh Small and harp player Andrew Ali have been joined by vocalist/guitarist Julie Karr, who also opened the show with a great acoustic set.

Pick up Tim Barry's new record "40 Miler" now available at Chunksaah Records. And be sure to check out an upcoming show, because truth is if you haven't seen Tim Barry live, you're only getting half the picture.

NEWS: GASLIGHT/SPRINGSTEEN PHOTOGRAPH IN ROLLING STONE

Yesterday I got a late X-mas gift and a great start to the new year. My photo of The Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon and Bruce Springsteen performing at the band's December Convention Hall show ran in Rolling Stone magazine's Random Notes section. It's totally cool to have a photograph in a magazine that I grew up reading and to be one step closer to the Bieber!

Thanks to Ken Weinstein & Big Hassle.

PHOTO: THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM AT ASBURY PARK CONVENTION HALL

Fans of The Gaslight Anthem got an extra special gift this holiday season at the band's annual end of the year show. "Have I not been good enough to you this year? Huh? Well maybe this will make up for it..." singer Brian Fallon teased before calling hometown hero Bruce Springsteen to the stage. As the crowd erupted and a wall of iPhones flickered to life, The Boss and band tore through "American Slang" from the 2010 album of the same name. With Asbury Park's Convention Hall literally decked with holiday cheer, The Gaslight Anthem turned out a fantastic set of old favorites and classic cover songs.

I don't know why but the whole night I had Bob Gruen's photos of The Clash running through my mind.  Similar to that band, Gaslight is a group comprised of four distinct yet complimentary personalities each with a unique visual style. More than once I saw traces of rock & roll's past when framing up the band, most notably bassist Alex Levine, equal parts Paul Simonon and a young Jerry Only.

There's alot more photos than this but Blogger is being finicky so to check out them all out head over to the Flickr gallery below.

MUSIC NEWS: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Deluxe Re-Issue

From the moment "Born To Run" was released as a deluxe re-issue back in November 2005, fans were foaming at the mouths and speculating what "Darkness" material may be stored away in the Springsteen vaults.

This fall, five years and one day from the "Born to Run" re-issue release, November 16th brings us the long awaited "Darkness" re-issue box set. Let's just say the wait was worth it. 3 CDs and 3 DVDs or Bluray, all packaged in an 80 page "notebook" including recording notes, alternate lyrics, and unreleased photos compiled from Springsteen's original personal journals.

Here's how The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story deluxe box set breaks down:

  • CD 1: Remastered "Darkness On The Edge Of Town - the complete original album digitally    remastered.
  • CD 2 & 3: The Promise Unreleased Tracks - 21 previously unreleased tracks from the recording sessions including a rock version of "Racing In The Streets," studio versions of "Because The Night" & "Rendevous", and eighteen other tracks that bootlegger nerds like me already knew about but are thrilled at official releases.
  • DVD/Bluray 1: The Promise - feature length documentary chronicling the making of Darkness On The Edge Of Town.
  • DVD/Bluray 2: Darkness On The Edge Of Town (Paramount Theater - Asbury Park, NJ 2009) & The Thrill Hill Vault - the complete album performed live without an audience in it's original sequence and twelve vintage video clips of various "Darkness" material.
  • DVD/Bluray 3: Houston '78 Bootleg House Cut - a complete live concert film from the legendary 1978 Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour.

Holy shit. I might pass out. Well I know what I'll be doing November 17th, sitting in my underwear nerding the fuck out. Should I tell my boss now or later I'm using a vacation day?

Click the header pic to check out the full press release with complete track listings.

Check out a clip from the doc and a preview of the unreleased track "Save My Love" streaming at brucespringsteen.net

And for proof that the making of doc is more than just fan-nerd filler, "The Promise: The Making Of Darkness On The Edge Of Town" premieres at this years Toronto International Film Festival.

BRUCE!!! CLINCH!!!!!

Caught two nights at Springsteen's Giant's Stadium close-out. One with my friends, one with my sis. I don't even know how many shows this makes for me.

Springsteen showed up for the closing of Danny Clinch's "Be True" show in Asbury Park.

Oh to be in that room.

Danny Clinch

Danny Clinch is one of my favorite photographers. He has photographed just about every person I could ever dream of shooting and he's done it beautifully. His style and attitude towards photography influences my own shooting every time I pick up a camera.

There are artists that serve as a catalyst, an initial spark of inspiration that can fade away as you grow. Then there are artists whose work influences you throughout your entire career. For me, Danny Clinch is one of the latter.

I was lucky enough to meet Danny at his show "Be True" this weekend. Unreleased Springsteen photos and a chat with one of your favorite artists, I'd say that's a pretty good day in Asbury.

PHOTOS: Asbury Galleria Wrap Up

July 31st saw the end of my exhibit at the Asbury Galleria. A sincere thank you to everyone who purchased a photo.

Most importantly, a huge thank you to Kay Harris, the Harris Family, and the Asbury Galleria crew - Gary, Carol, and Kelly. Everyone went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and welcome.

We headed down early on Friday the 3rd to beat the holiday traffic, check into the hotel, and setup for the next day's show. The Empress was booked full and the Berkley is on my shit-list, so we ended up staying a couple of minutes away in Long Branch. With help from everyone at the Galleria we got everything setup for the exhibit in just under two hours. Grabbed a shower back at the room and then took a ride down to Seaside Heights which lead to an interesting encounter with one of the boardwalk carnies, but that's for the next post.

4th of July. The boardwalk is alive again. I've never seen so many people in Asbury. The closest would be for a Springsteen show and even that falls short. If you we're here five years ago, you wouldn't recognize the place, shit if you were here two years ago you wouldn't recognize it.

Then: street-raff smashing open parking meters with a baseball bat to pocket the few uncollected coins left inside.

Now: out of towners charging an hours worth of parking on their credit card with the new automated parking meters.

Then: homeless folks huddling for warmth inside the old Howard Johnson's.

Now: 30 something professionals enjoying outdoor dining at Tim McCloones.

Then: The curb.

Now: Public bathrooms with running water and stocked toilet paper.

It's a different Asbury now.

One of the first business owners to take a chance on Asbury's renewal was Kay Harris. A life long resident, Kay opened the Asbury Galleria in 2005. At first glance, the Galleria looks little more than your normal art gallery with the addition of some beach supplies. But a closer look reveals the Galleria for its true self, a cultural and historical touchstone. It's the closest thing Asbury Park has to a museum.

I can't tell you how many times people came up to me and said "I remember that..." or even "...wow, I forgot about that." For many people returning to Asbury, the gallery takes them back to their childhood. For the first timers, it provides a glimpse into Asbury's long strange history. In the hands of anyone else you can imagine what the gallery could have been, cold and sterile. But Kay has managed to tap into the heart of the town and the spirit that has always lived below it's streets. For my first show, I don't think I would have wanted to be anywhere else.

That night we sat on the beach. Down the coast, other towns' celebrations could be seen. I'm sure they had big crowds too, but the Asbury boardwalk was packed front to back and all the way from the Casino to the Convention Hall. It was like everyone along the shore showed up. There was a feeling that this year was different. As one of the longest fireworks display I've ever seen filled the sky, it was clear things were different. Asbury Park is back.

For those that missed the show, here's the pics that were featured:
