Here's a little holiday treat. A couple of years back, The Bouncing Souls played a special acoustic set at Generation Records in NYC as part of Record Store Day 2009. Matt from Generations asked if we could shoot the performance in the hopes of cutting a promo clip for a future vinyl release.

With no lights, tough angles, and a basement so hot we back focus issues on the close-up cam, my friend Randy and I shot the entire hour and a half performance.

The promo clips came together and the vinyl only album The Bouncing Souls: Live At Generation Records was released on Record Store Day 2011.

But I always thought, though rough in form, the full cut of the performance captured that something special that so many people love about The Bouncing Souls. So with that in mind, here it is. Enjoy.

Miserable weather can't stop us record nerds! Generation Records hosted another great Record Store Day celebration this year with performances by Spa Castles, I Hate Our Freedom, The Jay Vons, and The Obits. I scored some sweet records including the Off! seven inch, The Bouncing Souls acoustic show, some Springsteen and Bob Dylan releases. No pics from the Obits set though as I got pulled to help film a video for them.

PHOTOS: Kurt Vile At Generation Records 3/8/11

Generation Records was packed wall to wall on Tuesday night for Kurt Vile's acoustic instore appearance. I'd never heard of Kurt Vile before. And I'll be completely honest, when the first song started I wasn't sure if I could sit through the rest of the set. I know my tastes and can usually tell if I will enjoy something after about thirty seconds. But about midway through the show I started to really dig Kurt Vile. By the end of the show I was totally won over and had to get his latest record Smoke Ring For My Halo. And I'm glad I did.

I don't know how to adequately describe Vile's music, it's something like Bob Dylan meets Lou Reed meets Van Morrison's cover of "It's All Over Now Baby Blue," kinda. It is definitely mood music, you may need to be in a particular mood to enjoy it or be prepared to be put in a mood. Either way, it's fantastic. I know I say this about alot of stuff but it has been on endless repeat since I got it. So good.

Vile's appearance at Generation Records was part of a series of stripped down acoustic performances at independent record stores throughout NYC including Academy Records and Other Music.

PHOTOS: Fucked Up w/ Double Dagger at NYU's Not So Valentines Day

Let me say, I have never seen so many rich preppy kids get so excited for a sweaty fat man with back hair. But that is what happened Friday night at NYU's Not So Valentine's Day Show.

So how did notorious punk/hardcore/indie band Fucked Up end up playing at NYU? As some of you know I work there. One of our student workers, David Miller, is on the committee for booking shows at NYU. Though a good six or seven years younger than me, we seem to be cut from the same cloth. David grew up in Florida going to shows, playing music, and buying obnoxious amounts of records & CDs. So when the opportunity came to book NYU's Valentine's Day show, David campaigned to get Fucked Up on the bill. Nice.

A couple of weeks before, he told me about Baltimore drum/bass/vocals supporting act Double Dagger and played me their latest record, More. I was instantly a fan and decided I had to check them out and see how their music translated in a live setting. Double Daggers did not disappoint. Introducing themselves with "Now that the kids have cleared the stage, we'll start the angry old bald man with beards portion of the show," Double Daggers tore through a dynamic set of DIY punk minimalism powered by fuzz drenched bass, pile driving drums and clever wordplay.

How can you not love lines like "Remember that night when my mouth forgot how to work / and you said we're most beautiful when we struggle / well, sometimes my life has more beauty than I can handle." This band is fucking awesome. Buy their records (Masks EP, More, Ragged Rubble, Double Dagger) and go see their show as soon as you can.

Fucked Up has long been praised for their genre bending concept albums and raucous live performances. If you haven't already seen this band, do so the next time they come to your town. And if you don't already own their albums, just go buy the whole catalog ok.

David was kind enough to put me and Matt Pullman from Generation Records on the guestlist and despite being the oldest people in the room, well in the audience at least, we were lucky to catch a great show. It was however a very strange feeling to be watching a hardcore show in a room I've sat in for department meetings. But watching NYU kids precariously learn how to stage dive and form a circle pit was even more hilariously weird.

No One and The Somebodies and DD/MM/YY also performed.

PHOTOS: Fake Problems & Let Me Run - Generation Records 9/29/10

One night before their performance at Radio City Music Hall in support of The Gaslight Anthem, Fake Problems stopped by Generation Records for a free instore performance. These kids from Naples, Florida are super nice and put on a great show. If you haven't checked out their fantastic new record Real Ghosts On Tape, go down to your local independent record store and pick it up. Or be like the cool kids and download it from Itunes. Either way, check it out.

With Rival Schools Walter Schreifels MIA yet again, New Jersey's Let Me Run came through as a great last minute replacement. I used to see these guys alot back in Jersey, opening for various bands or doing their own shows at Asbury Lanes. And it was good to see them again this time around. Check out their 2009 release Meet Me At The Bottom on XOXO Records.

PHOTOS: The So So Glos @ Generation Records

It's been a long time since I've been blown away by a band. A long time. But Saturday I saw a band that did just that.

Music today, especially most of what's coming out of Brooklyn isn't worth my time of day. The So So Glos sound like they're from London Town, but they're not. They're from Brooklyn, Bushwick to be exact.

The Clash influence is obvious, both visually and musically. Haters would dismiss the band as a ripoff at first look. But they would be missing out. If the So So Glos kids learned anything from The Clash, it was how to make genuine raucous punk rock. Clever world play, arrangements that break in every direction, and most importantly passionate delivery - it's all there.

Sometimes it's a couple of kids in a dingy basement playing over a dragging beat that remind you there's still hope.

Do yourself a favor and pick up their latest EP/LP? "Tourism/Terrorism." While it only runs about a half hour, it's gonna be stuck in your head for a lot longer than that.  And if your in NYC you can catch them this Thursday (Aug. 12th) at the Cake Shop with Ty Segall.

PHOTOS: Noise By Numbers @ Generation Records

Matt over at Generation Records keeps pulling together some kick-ass instores.

Noise By Numbers was the first band from the latest Generation instore event this past Saturday. Headed by Dan Schafer formerly of Screeching Weasel and Jeff Dean from The Bomb, the band has just released a solid new album, "Yeah, Whatever" on Asian Man Records.

Noise By Numbers combines elements of 80's indie rock with pop punk melody to create honest catchy sing along anthems. Fans of Jawbreaker, The Replacements, and Dinosaur Jr will find Noise By Numbers new album an easy and instant addition to their record collection.

After last years' amazing Bouncing Souls acoustic performance, Generation Records had alot to live up to for Record Store Day 2010. They delivered with an afternoon of music, beer, and Andrew WK.

Cymbals Eat Guitars started off the afternoon with a whole-hearted energetic set. Next up was Black Wine. This band is great, a nod to the early 90's indie rock scene ala Dinosaur Jr or the Vasolines. Closing out the day was Staten Island funk/afro beat collective Budos Band. And inbetween sets Andrew WK and Sohrab from Obits spun the turntables.

For the photo nerds out there, I rented the Canon 5D for this shoot and it's awesome. I'm making the transition over to Canon and these pics we're all shot with my new Canon 24-70mm 2.8L. Wow, what a camera. Can't wait to do some video on these new HDSLRs. Trying to wait for the 5D MarkIII to come out but it looks like I'm buying a 7D in the mean time!

 Frank Turner put in an amazing solo performance just before his headlining gig at Roseland Ballroom. After nearly an hour of songs, he had to literally rush out the door to the Roseland show.

If you haven't heard Frank Turner before check him out now. His live performances, either solo or with his full band, are better than his records. But he just signed to Epitaph so maybe they'll figure out how to capture the full Frank Turner experience.

The Latest.

I've been hard at work on my first photography book. The book will feature photos from my Asbury Park series, most of which appeared at the Asbury Galleria show this past summer along with some outtakes. So keep an eye out. It should be out by Spring.

Also, I'll have some new pics up soon, including some from Eerie Von's book signing and performance at Generation Records last week. Eerie's new book Misery Obscura is a must for any Misfits/Samhain/Danzig fan. Amazing collection of pics and stories. Buy it now.











Lyle Preslar from Minor Threat was there as well as Mike D'Antonio from Killswitch Engage. So it was an awesome night.

VIDEO: Bouncing Souls - Generation Records Acoustic Instore

I totally realize this thing is turning into some kind of Bouncing Souls shrine and that's really not the intent but here's something we shot back in April at Generation Records NYC in celebration of Record Store Day. What was supposed to be a short 5 song acoustic set turned into an amazing full show that anyone who was there is unlikely to forget.





We had no lights, no angles, and focus issues so it ain't my greatest work, but I guess it's one badass bootleg. I'll post more clips as they come together and stay tuned over at the Generation Records site cause I hear rumors there may be some kind of release planned.

If your a band in the NYC area and need pictures, hit me up. I need something new to shoot.
